Two Rivers Landing
City of Easton - Easton, Pennsylvania
The City of Easton’s Economic Development Commission proposed that five abandoned buildings on the city’s central square be converted into a multi-use museum complex housing The National Canal Museum and a Discovery Center created by Binney & Smith, the manufacturer of Crayola Crayons. A sloping bridge and an independent elevator tower are identifying features of the complex, and serve to discreetly re-emphasize the industrial heritage of the historic architecture.

“Schwartz/Silver’s task was to knit the complex into a coherent 65,000 square-foot whole that would no longer appear as separate buildings. The architect was also charged with renovating the historic architecture, shoring up the most prominent corner of the town square, and developing a cultural destination for a flow of visitors that ultimately would outnumber the town’s resident population by a factor of 12 to one – all for less than $10 million. All these goals were met with sensitivity and gentle humor.”
