The Shaw Center for the Arts combines the Louisiana State University Museum of Art with spaces for LSU’s studio arts programs and an important regional center for the performing arts. The project is located on one and a half city blocks in downtown Baton Rouge, and incorporates an historic older building, the “Auto Hotel.”  The primary public venues, the Museum of Art and the performing arts theaters, form a single structure that cantilevers over the Auto Hotel, which was rebuilt to house classrooms, art studios, curatorial spaces, and a Gallery for the LSU School of Art. The Shaw Center lobby, a 65-foot high space enclosed by glass, connects the three main elements of the project: the museum, the theater complex, and the studio and classroom spaces within the Auto Hotel. In 2018, the Shaw was named the best-designed museum in Louisiana by Architectural Digest.

The Shaw, a glowing modernist structure sheathed in a channel glass and stainless steel exostructure, brings a kind of comfortable informal encounter with the arts, theater and museums, for everyone, complete with a variety of social spaces. Student work mingles with LSU’s museum of fine art. A Louisiana mélange.
